The Indian fans expected team India to lift the ICC Champions Trophy yet another time ahead of the finals against Pakistan on June 18. However, Pakistan outplayed Virat Kohli and Co. and defeated them by a huge margin of 180 runs. The Indian bowlers failed to take wickets in the first half and in the later half, the star-studded batting line-up collapsed like a house of cards. As soon as India lost the match to Pakistan, the Indian fans turned out to be furious and started expressing their anger against the Indian cricket team on the city streets.
As reported by news agency ANI, the crowd of people in Kanpur and Haridwar staged a protest against the Indian cricket team after they faced a humiliating defeat from Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2017. The people couldn’t swallow this defeat and revealed their agitation by burning up the posters of Indian players and breaking TV sets on the roads just like the Pakistani fans used to do in their country when they lost to India. On the other hand, high security has been deployed outside the house former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in Ranchi.
This type protest was last seen during the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup when India lost to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. After losing these games, Team India was eliminated from the tournament and had to return home.

It is disheartening to see that fans have reacted to India’s defeat to Pakistan in this manner after they dominated the better part of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. They were the Defending Champions of the tournament and reached the final for the third time in the history of the tournament. And to top it all, they have lost the match against India in an ICC event after a long gap of 8 years. People need to understand that it is just a game of cricket and teams do lose to one another. Fans can criticise the players if they want to but taking actions like these will only degrade the spirit of the sport.
