Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin makes a big statement ahead of India’s first match against Pakistan in ICC Champions Trophy 2017 on June 4. However, Azharuddin’s views on veteran finishers of India— MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh who have proved their mettle. Yuvraj made a comeback in the ODI side against England earlier this year and proved himself with a career-best 150. Whereas Dhoni too helped him along the way by scoring a century. Despite their efforts in the recent past, whether it is in domestic games or Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, Azharuddin does not consider them much effective as they used to be.
Azharuddin said, “They can’t be (the same finishers). They have been playing cricket for 14-15 years and playing consistently is not possible. Yuvraj Singh’s game is not conducive to England. He hasn’t done so well since that hundred against England earlier this year.”
However, former Australian cricketer Michael Clarke had different thoughts about the veteran finishers duo, he said, “I’d go with the two most experienced players in Yuvraj and Dhoni. This is their time to really stand up. You do need the mix of youth and experience in the team. But if I have to pick between Yuvraj and Rahane, I would go with the experienced player.”
India will be playing their first match in ICC Champions Trophy 2017 against Pakistan on June 4. The selectors will have a tough time selecting the team with Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Kedar Jadhav and Ravindra Jadeja in good form. Yuvraj might not play owing to his fitness issues, Karthik who replaced an injured Manish Pandey in the side and proved himself against Bangladesh in the warm-up game.
