The skipper of Indian Women’s cricket team and first Indian cricketer to enter a foreign T20 league, Harmanpreet Kaur, has been found guilty of breaching Cricket Australia (CA) Code of Conduct during a Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) match between Sydney Thunders and Hobart Hurricanes at Hobart.
Harmanpreet was found breaching Article 2.1.2 of the Code of Conduct – abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a match, which is a Level 1 offense. This happened in her last game in which she was dismissed for just 6 runs and her team Sydney Thunder’s lost the game.
Following CA Code of Conduct, match referee Roy Loh considered the written reports given by the umpires and the proposed sanction was a reprimand. However, Harmanpreet agreed to the sanction and thus no hearing were held.
In the Women’s Big Bash League, Harmanpreet has scored 216 runs at 43.20 with a highest score of 47 not out while taking six wickets at an average of 15.50.
27-year-old Harmanpreet is the first Indian woman cricketer to sign with an overseas Twenty20 league after the Board of Control for Cricket in India gave permission for women cricketers to sign overseas contracts. She led the Indian women squad in the Asia Cup held in Thailand in 2016. Indian women lifted the Asia cup after beating Pakistan under her captaincy. She has represented India in 58 ODIs, 68 T20Is and two Test matches.
