Krunal Pandya bowling a bouncer in the second T20I between India and West Indies became one of the most talked about moments of the game. Pandya welcomed the 6’3″ Windies skipper Carlos Brathwaite with a bouncer. Bowling a bouncer is usually a fast bowler’s weapon and rarely used by spinners so when the latter does surprise people like that, it makes headlines.
The bouncer surprised Brathwaite who had no option but to duck the bowl. The Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik too had no clue how to tackle it as it went for four byes. But, this is not the first time Krunal has bowled a bouncer. He did it during India A’s tour of England as well.

The Indian left-arm spinner is not the only one who has tried bowling a bouncer on the international stage. Australia’s legendary leg spinner Shane Warne has bowled at least a couple of bouncers in his international career too. The batsmen he chose to bowl the bouncer were Sachin Tendulkar and Kevin Pietersen.
While batsmen are almost instantly surprised by a spinner bowling a bouncer, the ‘Master Blaster’ handled it like a pro. Both Brathwaite and Pietersen did not offer a shot off the bouncer but Tendulkar was one step ahead.
It is often said that Tendulkar was able to judge the length of the ball better than others. When Warne bowled a bouncer to Tendulkar in a Test match in 2001, the latter did not duck. Instead, he played his trademark uppercut to clear the slip fielder and hit the ball for a boundary.
Maybe that’s the reason why Warne had nightmares about Tendulkar. He was just that good!
