In a shocking turn of events, former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud suffered a stroke on July 29 morning after which he is likely to be flown to Singapore for further treatment. Earlier, he was admitted to a city hospital in Dhaka where his condition was reported to be critical. As reported by the ESPN Cricinfo, one of Mahmud’s family members has confirmed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is arranging an ambulance to him to the airport.
According to several media reports, BCB official Jalal Yunus has stated that the board will provide all the required support to Mahmud. He said,”The BCB members got to know his condition after enquiring why he couldn’t make to Sunday’s board meeting. He was admitted to hospital on Saturday morning and is currently in the ICU.”
“He is in a semi-coma and the CT scan has not revealed anything too serious,” he added.
Khaled Mahmud is currently the Chairman of Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) Game Development Committee. He was supposed to attend an emergency general meeting of the board on July 30 but following his absence, the members enquired further only to find about his deteriorated health condition.
He was Bangladesh’s third Test captain, having led them in nine games in 2003. He represented Bangladesh in 12 Tests and 77 ODIs and scored 991 runs while picking up 67 wickets in the limited-overs format. He retired from international cricket in 2006 and took up coaching and administration soon after. He had also taken part in the second season of the Walton Masters Cricket Carnival held only a few days ago, which is a tournament where only the retired cricketers take part.
