They say a run out is the last thing a team wants and that’s the truth. A batsman getting run out is criticised more because it looks like he is throwing their wickets away. If a batsman gets run out to a direct hit, it is still considered that the batsman ran out of luck before running himself out but sometimes they are just too funny to digest. Viewers find themselves falling off the chair after watching these runouts. A few of these videos are one of the most watched videos of the game.
Let’s take a look at the funny runouts that have taken place in the history of the game-
The one where we got to see two runouts in one ball-
Yes, you read that right. The one of a kind incident happened during a match between Sri Lanka and Asia XI in Afro-Asian Cup, 2005. The Durban ODI saw one of the most bizarre runouts in the history of the game. There was a terrible mix-up between South Africa’s Justin Kemp and Kenya’s Steve Tikolo on the first ball of 36th over.
Muttiah Muralitharan was bowling this over. Kumar Sangakarra could have run out Tikolo quite easily but he did not, he wanted to get the wicket of Kemp. Sangakarra threw the ball at the non-striker end where Muralitharan ran Kemp out who had left his bat on the pitch. After that Muralitharan threw the ball back to Sangakarra who removed the bails at the striker’s end too. Though Kemp was given out and Tikolo stayed as only one batsman can be given out on one ball.
The one with a random domestic game-
This runout is the mother of all runouts. The batsmen were involved in a terrible mix-up. The batsmen kept running between the wickets back and forth together and the left-hander had to lose his wicket at the end.
The one with Inzamam-ul-Haq falling on the ground
Inzamam-ul-Haq is considered to be one of the slowest runners between the wicket. It happened during an ODI between Australia and Pakistan. In the 47th over Damien Fleming was bowling and there had already been a runout of Mohammad Yousuf but more was to come. Fleming bowled a fuller delivery to Inzamam which made him fall on the ground.
Wasim Akram had already crossed over and run towards the non-striker end. It was an easy runout for Australia as Inzamam had fallen on the ground. He was given out and was limping back to the pavilion. The physio had to be called to escort Inzamam off the field.
The one where Amit Mishra did not seem to care
Amit Mishra was batting for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015 during an Indian Premier League (IPL) game against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Mishra had slogged and missed the ball from Faulkner, he attempted to go for a single but Sanju Samson threw the ball at the stumps. What followed after was one of the funniest runouts in IPL’s history.
Samson missed the stumps but Faulkner had been backing up. The southpaw threw the ball back at the stumps and missed. Just when Mishra thought he will be safe and strolled towards the striker’s end there came another throw and this time it hit the stumps. Mishra’s careless attitude cost him his wicket and cricket gained another funny runout.
The one with Misbah-ul-Haq’s brain-fade moment
Misbah-ul-Haq literally had a brain fade moment as he jumped his wicket away (not throw his wicket away. Misbah opened the face of the bat towards point as Sourav Ganguly was bowling. Dinesh Karthik came running and threw the ball at the non-striker end. Afraid that the ball might not hit him on the legs, Misbah jumped as the ball went through and hit the stumps. The replay showed that Misbah would have easily made his ground had he not jumped.
