Gautam Gambhir welcomes Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s sentencing, demands resolution on remaining 137458 rape trials

Dera Sacha Sauda chief supremo Gurmeet Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment by for rape on Monday (28th August)

Dera Sacha Sauda chief supremo Gurmeet Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment by for rape on Monday (28th August). This decision evoked mixed feelings among the mob, the convict’s supporters were angry and disgusted with the ruling of the Jagdeep Singh, a special CBI judge.

The sentence was pronounced in a makeshift court in the Sunaria jail where Ram Rahim, 50, had been lodged since his conviction on Friday. TV channels showed that the self-proclaimed godman broke into tears once the judgement was made, he also refused to leave the court and had to be forcibly be dragged. It has also been reported that he was looking eye to eye with the judge, may be trying to influence his judgement. But the judge did not budge under pressure. There was a mob of thousands standing outside the court hoping for a judgement in their favour, but that was not to be.

Supporting the judgement of the judge, Gautam Gambhir lauded the sentence but also made a suggestion, looking at the bigger picture. In a recently posted tweet, he wrote, “Bravo to d women, CBI court & Justice Singh. Now, let’s try 2 resolve over 1,37,458 pending rape trials (NCRB, 2015 data), they r our part too.”

It is great to see Gautam Gambhir being the ideal Indian, informative and opinionative, despite being an iconic cricketer for India. The country seriously needs more of such icons to come out in the open and speak on such issues which affect Indians, like rapes, terrorism. He has spoken on national issues in the past as well, condemning terror attacks. He has always had a point of view, which seems to be something missing nowadays.
