‘I played nearly entire World Cup with a finger injury, it was painful’: star women cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur

Harmanpreet Kaur grabbed the limelight after she led Indian women cricket team to World Cup finals with her unbeaten 171*-run knock against Australians

Indian batswoman Harmanpreet Kaur, who grabbed the limelight after she led the Indian women cricket team to the finals of the World Cup with her unbeaten 171* run knock from just 115 balls against the formidable Australian side on July 21, recently revealed that she played the entire ICC Women’s World Cup tournament with a finger injury. According to the reports, Harmanpreet suffered an injury to her ring finger on her left hand during India’s second league game.

In an interview with Times of India, Harmanpreet said, “I played nearly the entire tournament with a finger injury, which I suffered during our second league match against the Windies. I sustained the injury while fielding. The physio advised me rest, but I went back and managed to take two wickets. Thankfully, I didn’t have to bat in that game.”

“…It was painful, but I was determined to go beyond the pain barrier and perform for my country,” Harmanpreet added.

Harmanpreet, who is also in the reckoning to be India’s next captain, recalled: “At one point, it looked I might have to return home from the World Cup. I would like to give credit to our physio Tracy Fernandes for helping me play the full tournament.”

Earlier, Harmanpreet received rousing reception upon returning to her hometown Moga in Punjab. There was a roadshow organised for the star cricketer. She has also received a job offer from Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in the police department of the state.

Mithali Raj-led Indian Team made it to the finals but they lost the match against England with just 9 runs left to chase. Though they lost the game, they generated a huge interest among Indians about women’s cricket. It is commendable to see that despite suffering from physical pain, Harmanpreet Kaur continued to play and aimed to lift the World Cup for the country
