Ravichandran Ashwin completed his ten-wicket haul as India beat England by an innings and 36 runs in the fourth Test at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Monday. With this win, the hosts have clinched the series and are 3-0 up with the fifth Test scheduled to be played in Chennai from December 16.
Resuming the day at 182/6, the visitors were unable to cope with the vicious spell by Ashwin, who returned with match figures of 12 for 167. Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jayant Yadav took one wicket apiece. As for Ashwin, the off-spinner is now second Indian with the maximum ten-wicket hauls for India in the game’s longer format. Team India coach and former captain Anil Kumble leads the tally with eight.
Joe Root was the highest scorer for England with a score of 77, while the remaining batsmen failed to tackle a fiery bowling attack.

Virat Kohli, who shattered several records during his innings of 235, was adjudged man-of-the- match.”It is indeed a special feeling. The crowd came in large numbers and supported, which helped us to get pass tense moments. The 231-run lead deflated the opposition. We saw their body language and were aware that the game was already over when we gained that lead,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“We were not good enough to match to India’s level. We wanted to see how our four speedsters would look like. This is because on the tour they had given us control while our two best spinners have been Moeen and Rashid,” Cook said.
On Sunday, Kohli became the highest individual scorer as an Indian captain while Jayant Yadav scored his maiden Test century to help India post a mammoth 631 in reply to England’s first innings total of 400. The duo stitched together a 241-run partnership for the eighth wicket which put the match beyond the visitor’s reach. Indian opener Murali Vijay also scored a century. For England, Adil Rashid took four wickets but gave away 192 runs. Moeen Ali wasn’t spared either as his two wickets came at a cost of 172 runs.
