Gautam Gambhir has been a great student of the game and also takes interest in political issues. He is currently the skipper of the Kolkata Knight Riders team and he has complimented Australia for the show at the ongoing Border-Gavaskar trophy and that has drawn flak.
So what did the Delhi southpaw say that raised the eyebrows?
Speaking to an Indian website Gautam Gambhir said, “We should give credit to the Australian side which has played remarkably. Most players like Harbhajan (Singh) and Sourav (Ganguly) predicted a whitewash for India, but they have proved themselves brilliantly and with everything on the line, Australia will be a tricky opponent.”
Adding fire to it, he added, “It is fine to play hard and do whatever you can to upset the opposition till the time you don’t get personal. These are not robots playing the game, and when you are playing for your country and there are so many expectations on your shoulder, emotions can take over sometimes.”
Many cricketing pundits have spoken about the series at length, some have even called it the most ‘toxic’ series ever. By the looks of it another chapter still remains to be unfolded. In under 48 hours from now, team India led by Virat Kohli will be eyeing their seventh straight Test series win. On the other hand, Australia led by Steve Smith will look to create their own little history by clinching the series, so there is a lot at stake for both the cricketing supergiants.
