India vs Australia, 2nd Test, Day 3 highlights: Pujara-Rahane remind us of Dravid-Laxman duo

India vs Australia live cricket score: India are off to a good start in first session, they will be looking to get rid of the trail in the second session

It was a day that belonged to India mostly. They played their cards right by bundling Australia out in the first session and then surviving it with the bat. Though, there was a moment in the second session where it looked like India might suffer a batting collapse but Pujara and Rahane stood their ground and their wickets intact. They scored runs at a good run rate as well giving India a lead of 126 runs at the end of Day 3’s play. The duo reminded us of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman as they kept the Australian bowlers at bay. There was turn and bounce from the pitch but they survived Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe’s spell.

Even when fast bowlers were bowling the ball kept a bit low at times but they managed to get their bat down in time. These two have opened the game for all possibilities. Day 3, Stumps!

Rahane comes forward on the next one and is beaten by the spin on the ball, survives as the ball misses edge by a whisker. He blocks the next delivery with a straight bat. He pushes the last ball towards shot mid-on, no run, a maiden from O’Keefe.

He come forward with a straight bat this time, no run. He rocks back on back foot and tries to smash the ball but could not time it as the ball goes straight to the point fielder, no run. 14:18 IST The second session turned out to be completely opposite to that of the first session, India have lost four wickets and managed to score take a lead of 35 runs. They need more runs to pose a challenge to Australian batsmen, Pujara is batting incely, India need him to go on and play a big innings. India should not lose wickets in the last session or otherwise we might witness another batting collapse from them. The second Test is equally poised, it is Indian batsmen to make a mark in the Test series.

It will be apt to say that the first session belonged to India as they managed to take four wickets in a matter of 39 runs and then did not lose a single wicket at the stroke of lunch break. Indian openers Abhinav Mukund and KL Rahul have done well to keep Australian bowlers at bay. There was some banter involved between Mitchell Starc and Mukund when the top edge went for a six. Gear up for more banter or even sledges on Day 3 as India have started off well in the second innings.


A lead above 300 would make it a nightmare for Australian batsmen to play on this pitch. India batsmen need to score runs if they are to give the bowlers a fighting chance in the second Test.

He comes round the wicket to Mukund, he does well to defend that one, no run. Uneven bounce again, no run off that delivery either. Mukund comes forward on that one, offers a straight bat, no run. He goes on back foot this time, no run on that occasion either.

11:26 IST Lyon continues, Rahul takes a single off the first ball. Mukund on strike, he watches the ball closely going in the hands of Wade. He plays the ball towards off side, no run. He shoulders arms on the next one, looks like Mukund has gained confidence. Pitched towards leg side, Mukund plays the ball with a straight bat, Lyon does well to stop that running to this left. Whoa! that one did not bounce, Mukund survives as it misses the stumps by a whisker.

That was going down the leg side, Mukund missed out on an opportunity to hit a boundary, unlucky! Another short of the length delivery, Mukund drops it’s bat on that, no run. SIX! That was in the air for a while, the short ball takes a top edge off the bat and goes for a maximum, first six of the innings, Starc is not happy at all.

11:17 IST Nathan Lyon has been introduced into the attack, he nudges it towards off side, no run. He gets on the back foot off the next ball and punches it towards covers, no run. He gets on the back foot again, pushes it to mid-wicket, no run. He goes deep into the crease and cuts the ball back of the poin fielder for a single. Next ball, after a few fielding changes, Rahul gets on the back foot and hits the ball towards mid-wicket, no run. That one hits pads, faint shout from Lyon as it was clearly going down the leg.

11:13 IST Starc comes round the wicket, Rahul guides that towards the third man, there is no fielder there, Rahul picks up a couple of runs. Rahul pushes the next one towards covers, no run. Rahul comes forward and defends that one as well as he did not show intent to score runs off it. He takes a single off the next ball, Mukund on strike. A short delivery to him from Starc, he manages to get bat on that and keep it down. He pushes the ball for a single towards fine leg.

11:08 IST Hazlewood continues, that was angled into him, Rahul defends it with a closed face of the bat, no run. He guides the next ball towards point for a single, Mukund on strike. Extra bounce for him on that occasion, Mukund does well to let that go as Hazlewood came round the wicket, similar tactics to Indian bowlers.

11:03 IST Starc continues, Rahul on strike. He lets the first ball go towards wicketkeeper, no run. A short of the length delivery, Rahul was in the dilemma whether to play that or not, gets his bat out of the way at last time, no run. An inside edge off the next ball takes a single. Starc is causing problems for the batsmen.

Mukund could not time that one, the ball goes towards the gully. FOUR! Mukund gets his first boundary as he shuffles across and guides the ball towards mid-wicket boundary. A good sign for India that he is getting into the groove.

Raw pace from Hazlewood, Rahul shoulders arms once again, watching the ball closely, no run. Next ball, Rahul punches the over-pitched delivery with a straight bat, marvellous drive for a FOUR! He looks in fine form.

Next ball, he could not time the ball as it fell short of the gully fielder, he needs to be more cautious. Pitched towards legs, he flicks it for a single, Mukund on strike. He gets off the mark with a couple of runs towards mid-wicket.

10:52 IST Mitchell Starc to start the proceedings, Rahul on strike, he tucks the short of the length delivery towards fine leg for a single. Mukund on strike. Starc bowls an out-swinger to Mukund, he tries to reach it but could not get bat on that, the ball misses the edge and goes into Wade’s hands. A good length outswinger from him, Mukund lets it go but Wade could not get hold of it. Rahul-Mukund run for a single as the Umpire signals byes.

Huge lbw shout from Starc as the ball swung back to Rahul, Umpire shakes his head. Rahul survives. Onto the pads and Rahul gets his bat on that, he scores his first boundary of the innings. He pushes the ball towards mid-wicket and takes a quick single.

Australia are leading by 48 runs with 4 wickets in hand. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mathew Wade and Mitchell Starc are currently batting and the responsibility will on their shoulders to pile up runs and take a lead similar to that of Pune so that they have an upper hand over the hosts.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli & Co. will be looking to take full advantage of situations early on in the first session. They were quite unlucky on Day 2 as they could not bundle out Australia at the end of day’s play. The pressure on India will increase with every run scored as a lead above 100 would be advantage Steven Smith & Co.

Pitch Report:
The pitch has no pace in it although there is still some turn and bounce when you hit the rough. There is no bounce for the fast bowlers which gives the fast bowlers an advantage as they will come round the wickets to left-handers. The chances of getting leg before wicket or leading edges will be high on Day 3. Indian bowlers need to bowl right lines to get early breakthroughs and use the pitch to utmost effect. If India do get Australia bundled out in the first session. They will have a mammoth task ahead of them to post a fighting total for the Australians to chase.
