In a nail biting finish, England registered their first victory of their Indian cricket tour, edging past the hosts by five runs in the inconsequential third and final One-Day International (ODI) at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday.
Chasing 322 to win, India almost rode on Kedar Jadhav’s brilliant 90 off just 75 balls along with Hardik Pandya’s career-best score of 56 off 43 balls, which saw a match-winning 104-run sixth wicket stand off just 83 balls.
But, with 16 runs needing in the last over, Jadhav hit a six and a four off the first two balls to give the 66,000-odd crowd some hope, but fell to Chris Woakes eventually.
2nd innings score:
Ind: 316/9 (50 overs), K Jadhav top scored with 90.
Highlights
Massive six, and a four India now need just 6 runs in juts 4 balls. All eyes on Jadhav. Can he?
Team India need 16 in the last over to clinch the series 3-0. Kedhar Jadhav has the potential and he can score big ones.

After 45 overs, India were 275/5. Both the batsmen Hardik Pandya and Kedhar Jadav hit much needed fifty. In his 64 runs knock, Jadhav has struck 9 fours. While Pandya in his 55 runs knock smashed 4 fours.

After 40 overs, India were 229/5. Hardik Pandya and Kedhar Jadav batting sensibly in the middle. India is hoping for turnaround. They both need to carry on till the end.
After 35 overs, India were 193/5. Hosts struggling to find stability as they lost all the key batsmen including M S Dhoni, skipper Virat Kohli and last match hero Yuvraj Singh. When Dhoni was looking good, he edged and was caught behind. Team India now require a partnership knock between Hardik Pandya and Kedhar Jadav. Jake Ball is the leading wicket taker for England. He has so far claimed 2 wickets.

After 30 overs, India were at 166/4 start of the 26th over was not so good for India as Liam Plunkett came and dismissed Yuvraj after he has scored 45. Another shock to India. Kedar Jadhav came in at number 6. A good over that was for Plunkett as he conceded only 1 run. Moeen Ali continued with the ball in the 27th over and again didn’t give much chance to the Indians to score. Again, just 1 run came off the over. Morgan continued the pace and spin rotation and going by that formula again sent Plunkett to attack. But this time, MS Dhoni welcomed him with a huge 6 and sent the ball into the stands. 9 runs came off the over and Kedar Jadhav opened his account of runs after facing 6 balls. Following skipper Morgan’s rotational theory, Mooen Ali gin came to bowl the 29th over and didn’t give a run in the first two balls. However, Jadhav managed to hit a four in the 5th ball towards the fine leg and ended the over with another 4 as well. 10 runs came from that over. England changed the bowler for the 30th over and brought Jake Ball. But again, MS Dhoni smashed a stunning 4 in the very first ball. While Jadhav also came forward and smashed the 2nd boundary of the inning in the 3rd ball. Along with these two boundaries, 5 more runs were scored and a total of 13 runs came from the over.
After 25 overs, India were at 132/3. Spin attack came up in the 21st over delivered by Moeen Ali. But Yuvraj smashed him for a 4 in the 2nd ball. A total of 5 runs came from the over. Pace attack was brought back in the 22nd over as Liam Plunkett was brought to deliver and Yuvraj welcomed him with a massive 4. 3 more singles were taken and 7 runs came from the over. Moeen Ali was assigned to deliver the 23rd over and Yuvraj ended that with a six. 2 singles and a leg-bye 4 were also scored making a total of 12 runs. Liam Plunkett was brought back into attack Yuvraj was at 43 and MSD was taking his time to get settled. A good over was bowled by Plunkett as just runs came off it. India were just 194 runs ahead. The ball was given again to Moeen Ali and just 4 runs came of it.

After 20 overs, India were at 102/3. To bowl the 16th over, Ben Stokes came in. Yuvraj looked pretty confident and hit the first boundary of this innings in the 3rd delivery of the over. Stokes conceded 5 runs in the over. Then, Kohli was on strike and 2 run away from his 50. Plunkett bowled the first ball of the 17th over while Kohli took a single and reached 49. Yuvraj got the strike and hit two boundaries to Plunkett. 10 runs came off the over. Kohli was back on strike and to deliver the 18th over, Stokes came in. The first ball went wide but in the very next ball, Kohli took two runs and completed the 39th 50 of his career. Stokes gave 7 runs in the over including 3 wides. The bowling was changed in the 19th over and spin attack was introduced. Moeen Ali had the bowl and delivered a calculated over conceding just 4 runs. The 20th over was delivered by Stokes again and gave a massive shock to the Indian side. He dismissed Kohli at 55. Then came MS Dhoni at number 5. Just 2 runs came off the 20th over.

After 15 overs, India were at 74/2. Plunkett came back o bowl the 11th over and gave just 4 runs. While Virat had charged up himself to lead from the front, Yuvraj was playing steadily as the duo wanted no more damages to the team. Jake Ball bowled the 12th over and just 4 runs came off it. Both the batsmen rotated strike ball by ball and showed no hurry. Plunkett came in to deliver the 13th over. In the third ball, England missed a chance to dismiss Kohli as he was dropped near the boundary at 35. Kohli ended the over with a 4 and 7 runs came off the over. It was the over number 14 and Jake Ball took the charge to deliver. After 13.4 overs England were 71/0 while India was at 69/2. The over ended with just 2 runs coming off it. Plunkett continued delivering the 20th over and conceded 5 runs including a boundary coming off Virat’s bat.
After 10 overs, India were at 52/2 . In the 6th over, Eoin Morgan decided to give the ball to Jake Ball. Again at the 2nd ball, Kohli hit a four and completed 1000 runs as a Captain. But at the last ball of the over India reduced to 37/2 as KL Rahul departed after scoring 11 runs. 5 runs scored in the 6th over. Yuvraj, the man who smashed England in the last match, comes in. Woakes returns to bowl the 7th over and Yuvraj takes his time to get settled on the crease. Just 1 run scored in over no 7. Jake Ball came two deliver the 8th over and 5 runs came out of the over. Both Yuvi and Virat looked determined to get settled and score to win the game. 9th over was bowled by Woakes again and Kohli hit two massive 4s in the 2nd and the 4th ball. 8 runs came off the 9th over. Ball continued with the 10th over. The third ball of the over hit Yuvraj in the rib-cage but he continued to bat after few moments. Just one run came off the 10th over.

After 5 overs, India were at 32/1. With a motive to win the last match of the series, India had a very good start. 11 runs came out of the first over as KL Rahul hit a huge six and a four in the first over to Chris Woakes. Next came David Willey. Ajinkya Rahane who replaced Shikhar Dhawan in this game couldn’t play up to the mark and was bowled by Willy in the 4th ball of the over. Rahane was dismissed after scoring 1 run off 6 balls. Virat came next at number 3. Woakes continued with the 3rd over and Kohli did the damage in the 2nd and 3rd ball by hitting two consecutive fours. 8 runs came off the 3rd over. WIlley continues with the 4th over and Kohli looked a bit struggling in the 3rd and 4th ball. In the 5th over, Woakes came again in the ball. Kohli smashed a phenomenl cover drive off the 2nd deliveryand sent the ball beyond the boundary for four. 5 runs came out off the 5th over.
Aiming to clinch the series 3-0, Indian openers KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane take the guards as they began their run chase in the third and the final One Day International at Kolkata. England, after being asked to bat first, set 322 runs target for the hosts.
England scored 58 runs in the last five overs to finish strongly. The seventh-wicket partnership of Stokes and Woakes compiled 73 runs. Hardik Pandya (3/49) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/62) took wickets at important junctures but England batsmen still managed to put up a strong total. England lost 8 wickets and fought really hard to reach a total of 321 runs despite a very poor start.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was brought in the 46th over to start the last spell and he was welcomed with a huge six hit by Ben Stokes. It was not a good over for Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was brought in the 46th over to start the last spell and he was welcomed with a huge six hit by Ben Stokes. It was not a good over for him though, as he conceded 14 runs in the over. In the 47th over, Bumrah came in and gave 7 runs in the over. The English lower order tried hard to send the ball out of the boundary each time but skipper Kohli has set the fielding in such a way that everytime the ball was stopped before it could cross the boundary. Bhuvneshwar came to deliver the 48th over and finished it conceding 11 runs. Ben Stokes completed his fifty as well. The 49th over came as the most expensive over of the game. Bumrah was the bowler who was welcomed with a huge six at the very first ball and by the over end, he had given 16 runs. Last over was bowled by Bhuvneshwar who gave 10 runs and two back to back wickets fell in the last two balls.
After 45 overs, England are at 263/6. The second last spell of the English commenced and Kohli brought Ashwin to deliver the 41st over. Again, it was not a good deal for Ashwin as he was welcomed with a a six by Stokes and gave 10 runs in the over. Pandya had the ball again and one more time, he struck heavily in the 42nd over. In the 3rd bowl, he dismissed set batsman Bairstow at a score of 56 and succeeded to extract the third scalp of the day. Then came Moeen Ali to accompany Stokes after the fall of 5th wicket. Pace continued for the 43rd over too and Bumrah continued with his 7th over. This time Bumrah found his victim. He conceded 7 runs and dismissed Moeen Ali (2) at the last ball. Chris Woakes came in. Pace continued for the 43rd over as well and Panday took the charge. In his last over, he gave 7 run including a 4 hit by Woakes and completed his spell with a total of 49 runs at an economy of 4.9 rpo and took 3 important wickets. Bumrah came in to bowl the 45th over and gave 10 runs with a 4 hit by Stokes to the fine leg.
After 40 overs, England were at 225/4. Pace was introduced inthe 36th over and Pandya came to deliver. Again a good over of him as only 1 run came out of it. Kohli again rotates the attack and handed over the ball to Ashwin. Aswin conceded 7 runs including a boundary hit by Bairstow. After 37th over had ended, Jonny Bairstow moved closer to his half century. In an attempt to harm the English batting again, Pandya was given charge to bowl the 38th over. In the 3rd ball, it was supposed that Pandya had done his job which he was brought for. There was an appeal for caught behind against Bairstow and was also given out by the umpire. But, England took its first review and Bairstow was safe. But Pandya didn’t stop here. In the last ball of the over he struck back and sent Jose Buttler to pavilion at a score of 11 runs. England was reduced to 212/4. Ben Stokes was the new man in. Ashwin came in for the 39th over and gave 8 runs including a boundary hit by Bairstow which helped him to reach his 50. Pandya was assigned to deliver the 40th over and he conceded 5 runs including a 4 hit by Stokes.
After 35 overs, England were at 202/3. The most important wicket of skipper Eoin Morgan was taken in this spell. Spin continued in the 31st over and Ashwin took the charge. 8 runs came out of it including a 4 hit by Morgan. Spin attack continued for the 32nd over as well and Jadeja came in. Not a good one for Jadeja as Bairstow hit the first ball for four and then a massive 6 was hit by Morgan in the 5th ball. On the whole, 14 runs were scored. Both the batsmen seemed comfortable at that point. Again came Ashwin with the 33rd over and conceded 13 runs including another huge six coming off Morgan’s bat. For the 34th over, Kohli preferred pace attack and gave the ball to Pandya. It was a harsh journey for Pandya prior to that over but he was back with a bang as he gulped English skipper Eoin Morgan. Caught by Bumrah on the leg side, Morgan was dismissed after he had scored 43. Jos Buttler was the new man in. The over ended with just 2 runs including a wide and important wicket of the skipper. It was a good comeback by Pandya and the bowling change was benefitting the Indian squad. Jadeja bowled the 35th over gave 7 runs including a four hit by Butler.

After 30 overs, England were at 164/2. Jadeja came up with the 26th over and faced a 6 in the 2nd ball by Bairstow. However, he tried to be back on track soon and gave 9 runs in the over. 26th over had a bowler change and pace was introduced to break the monotony. Bumrah delivered the 27th over and gave 7 runs including a wide and a four hit by Morgan. Change in attack again and spin was back. Jadeja started the 28th over and 7 runs came out of it with a boundary hit by Bairstow. Indian skipper Kohli again rotated the bowling attack and brought back Bumrah in the 29th over. In the second ball, there was a big appeal against Morgan for caught behind to Umpire Kumara Dharmasena. Umpire denied. India took its first review and challenged umpire’s decision. Nothing on UltraEdge when the ball passed the bat. Morgan was safe. Drama created again in the 3rd ball when Baistow was caught by Ashwin but it was declared a no-ball as Bumrah had over stepped the crease. Finally the over ended with 7 runs coming out of it including a no ball and a six in the free hit. In the over no 30, Jadeja came back and gave 5 runs.
After 25 overs, England were at 127/2. After losing the opening pair England headed forward with Bairstow and skipper Eoin Morgan with 110/2 over the scoreboard. Ashwin bowled the 21st over and conceded 3 off it. A good one for Ash. Jadeja took charge of the next over and finished the 22nd over and making no mistakes gave just 3 out of it. Ashwin was brought back again in the 23rd over and just 4 runs were scored. The bowling cycle continued and Jadeja came in again with the 24th over gave just 1 run. Over number 25 was again delivered by Ashwin but this time a boundary came off Bairstow’s bat in the 2nd ball. 6 runs came out of the 25th over. This 5 over spell seemed a great trouble for both batsmen as they managed to score just 17 runs.
After 20 overs, England were at 110/2. England lost its first 2 wickets in this spell.

The bowling attack was changed in the 16th over and Jadeja came in. Not a good start for Jadeja as he gave 11 runs off his first over. In that over, the first six came for England from Roy’s bat and he scored his half century. It was his 3rd fifty in a row. Next came Yuvi again to continue the spin attack in the 17th over and gave just 6. Jadeja continued in the 18th over and extracted the first English scalp. Billing was caught by Bumrah on the leg side and was dismissed for 35. Next Batsman came in — Jonny Bairstow. He has replaced Alex Hales in this game. 5 runs and a wicket, the spell by Jadeja in the 18th over. The bowling changed in the 19th over and Ashwin had the ball who gave 7 runs. In the 20th over Jadeja returned and took his 2nd wicket. He bowled Jason Roy at a score of 65.
After 15 overs, England were at 80 without loss. Pandya replaced Bumrah in the 11th over and it seemed that the batsmen have read his bowling completely. Pandya gave 10 runs this time. Then came Bumrah in to deliver the 12th over and gave 4 runs only. Once again it was an accounted spell from Bumrah. The 13th over had a changed bowling spell as spin came in. It was Yuvraj with the ball. The man who destroyed English bowling at Cuttack on January 19 was then on the field with the bowl. Yuvi conceded 5 off his first over. Bumrah continued with his 4th and 14th over of the game. He gave 11 runs with a wide. Yuvi returned to throw his 2nd and game’s 15th over. He conceded 7 runs. Meanwhile, Jason Roy has turned stable now as he has reached very near to his half-century while Billings is still struggling with the ball and run difference.
After the end of 10 overs, England were at 43/0. In the last 5 overs, both the Englishmen tried to counter the Indian bowling with patience. On the other hand, the Indian pace attack didn’t loose the control. Bhuvi again tightened the grip and conceded just single run in the 7th over. In the 8th over, Jasprit Bumrah replaced Pandya. He looked confident and started troubling the batsmen from the first ball itself. The English opening pair looked struggling in front of Bumrah. The right-hand seamer gave just 1 run in his first over. In the 9th over, Bhuvneshwar conceded 6 runs while Bumrah was back to bowl the 1oth over and gave just 4 runs. Despite knocking few boundaries, the batsmen were clearly trying hard to get settled on the crease as soon as possible.
After the end of 5 overs, England were 27 without loss. Indian bowlers gave a massive start as only one run was scored in the first two overs and that too came due to a wide delivery bowled by Bhuvneshwar in the first over. English openers Jason Roy and Sam Billings were struggling very hard to go off the mark in second over as well, bowled by Hardik Pandya. But in the 3rd over, Jason Roy came out of the shell and smashed a four to Bhuvneshwar in the very first ball of the over. Roy didn’t just stop there and continue hitting in the 4th over and smashed three boundaries to Pandya. In the fifth over, both the batsmen looked good and started leading from the front.
Earlier, Team India won the toss and its skipper Virat Kohli had decided to bowl first in the third and the final One Day International match of the series against England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on January 22.

Both the teams have made certain changes in the squad. In the Indian side, Ajinkya Rahane has replaced Shikhar Dhawan while England has made two changes. For England, Jonny Bairstow has replaced injured Alex Hales and Sam Billings is the another change in the squad.
The pitch conditions at the Eden are good as stated in the pitch report. There will be dew factor too as the dew will start surmounting the ground from around 5:30 pm in the evening. With the arena being much bigger compared to Pune and Cuttack, the competition could be tougher. Spinners will definitely enjoy the bowling on this surface.

Earlier in the day, stand named after former cricketer and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly was unveiled.
Asked how he feels about his name now being etched in Eden folklore, Ganguly said, “It’s a huge honour and I thank the working committee and Biswaroop (Dey, former CAB treasurer) for proposing my name.”
The three-match rubber has already been pocketed by Virat Kohli’s men who have won the first two matches at Pune and Cuttack.
With there being no 50-over matches before June when the Champions Trophy gets underway in England, coach Anil Kumble and captain Kohli will have a final chance to assess the squad.
The hosts have played like a well-oiled machine so far in the series whether chasing a target or batting first.
For the tourists, it hasn’t been all downhill with their batsmen showing enough resolve to take the challenge to India. Besides Morgan, opener Jason Roy, the highly rated Joe Root, and all-rounder Ben Stokes have played well.
What has let them down though is their bowling which is thin on experience especially in sub-continental conditions.
On the back of two defeats against India in their three-match One-Day International (ODI) series, England opener Jason Roy on Saturday said every game from now on is a build-up to the Champions Trophy starting this June.
“We want to finish the series on a high. Every game from now on is a stepping block for us going into mega tournament,” Roy told reporters on the eve of the third ODI against India at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.
