After thrashing Sri Lanka in the first One Day International at Dambulla, Virat Kohli-led team India won the toss and opted to field first. Sri Lanka started off well before they lost Niroshan Dickwella to a great catch by Shikhar Dhawan. The score then was 41, but the hosts kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Gunathilaka and Mendis both departed for 19 each. Tharanga the captain also lost his wicket early to Hardik Pandya for 9 runs. Angelo Matthews scored 20 runs. Sri Lanka was looking down the barrel when Siriwardena and Kapudegara got together and stitched a lavishing partnership of 93 runs. Siriwardena and Kapugedara scored 58 and 40 respectively. From the Indian point of view, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 4 wickets. Chahal too contributed with the ball, as he got 2 wickets. The hosts were bundled out for 237, but due to a slight delay due to rain, the match was reduced to 47 overs. India needed 231 to win.
India started off like champions with Shikhar Dhawan for a change was playing second fiddle to Rohit Sharma who was playing the aggressors role. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan brought up their 100-run partnership before Dananjay wrecked havoc and picked 4 quick wickets to reduce India to 119 for 5. Virat Kohli was bowled for 4. Soon India was in more trouble when they lost Hardik Pandya and the score was 121 for 6. Kedar Jadhav was also dismissed. After India lost its seventh wicket in came Bhuvneshwar Kumar and joined Mahendra Singh Dhoni who looked determined to take India over the line. They played in a very slow manner, and they put a partnership in excess of 50. India was playing in a very cautious manner.

It was Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar who finally saw India home. India won with w6 balls to spare. India wins by 6 wickets. MS Dhoni remained not out on 38 and Kumar was not out on 43. India take a 2-0 lead in the series.
