No more National Anthems in the upcoming India vs Sri Lanka ODI matches. Here’s the reason

In accordance with a sporting practice followed in Sri Lanka, national anthems of the two countries is to be played only in the first match of any series

After registering the biggest victory while chasing a target of more than 200 against the hosts, the Indian cricket team is all set to again take on the Sri Lankans on August 24 in Kandy. The home side badly lost the Test series by 3-0 and now, they desperately need to make a strong comeback and win at least two ODI matches so as to avoid playing the qualifier games for World Cup 2019.

Meanwhile, the team manager of Sri Lanka has stated that national anthems will no more be sung during the series. As per several media reports, in accordance with a sporting practice followed in Sri Lanka, national anthems of the two countries will not be played anymore. The rule states that the national anthem is to be played only in the first match of any series.

While speaking to the media personnel, Sri Lanka team manager Dinesh Ratnasingham said,”We have adopted the practice of singing National Anthem only at the beginning of each format of the game.”

The media manager of the home team further said,”The teams sang their respective National Anthems in the first ODI match at Dambulla. They will sing again before the commencement of the only T-20 match on September 6. Rest of the venues will have the immediate start of the match without the Anthem Ceremony.”

It has become a tradition in International cricket that the teams sing their national anthems before the match starts in accordance with the practice followed in almost every kind of international sport as the anthem is considered as a symbol of national pride and allegiance for a player.

Talking about the ongoing ODI series, the home team would be craving to become a worthy opposition. They have already had their captain replaced after they lost the ODI series against Zimbabwe recently. Newly appointed captain Upul Tharanga has to come out with a new strategy so as to get his team back on track.
