R Ashwin sets world record, becomes fastest cricketer to achieve 2000 runs & 250 wickets in Test matches

Ravichandran Ashwin achieved this feat during the second day of the second Test match between India and Sri Lanka

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin on August 3 registered a world record after he became fastest cricket all-rounder to achieve Test double of scoring 2000 runs and taking 250 wickets. R Ashwin achieved this feat during the second day of the second Test match between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Friday.

Came to bat after the fall of Cheteshwar Pujara’s wicket, R Ashwin who along with Ajinkya Rahane helped their team to edge past 400 run mark. During the course of the match, Ashwin notched up his 11th Test fifty. He achieved his feat in the 123rd over of their innings when he smashed Rangana Herath’s delivery for a six over long-off. Not only this, during his innings Ashwin also brought up 2000 Test runs. He thus became the 37th Indian to achieve the feat and 300th overall.

According to Zee News, with 279 Test wickets under his belt, Ashwin also became the fourth Indian cricketer to achieve a Test double of 2,000 runs and 250 wickets. Kapil Dev, Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble are the three other Indians to do so.

Earlier, India rode on a strong batting performance by the middle and lower order to post a mammoth total of 622/9 and declared on the second day of the second cricket Test.

In reply, Sri Lanka posted 50/2 in their first innings at stumps on Day 2. Ashwin picked up two important wickets of Uppal Tharanga and Dimuth Karunaratne.

Kusal Mendis (16 batting) and Dinesh Chandimal (8 batting) were at the crease when the umpires decided to call it a day.

India now have a lead of 572 runs.
