The Indian bowling attack completely bamboozled the Sri Lankan batting line in the first ODI at Dambulla on August 20. Despite a good start, the home team collapsed within 216 runs and set an easy target of 217 runs for the Indian guests. The chase began with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma opening the Indian innings. They provided a steady start as Dhawan continued his flamboyant batting in the ODIs as well. However, Rohit Sharma, who is back in the blues after the Champions Trophy, couldn’t spend much time at the crease and got run out on 13 in the fifth over.
Ahead of the second innings, Rohit looked confident and it seemed that the Indian opening pair will add a fair amount of runs for the first wicket. However, Rohit turned out to be unfortunate a bit and got dismissed soon. In the last ball of the fifth over, Lasith Malinga came into the bowl while Rohit had the strike. Rohit drove the ball in front of point and called Shikhar Dhawan for a quick single. While he got nearer to the crease his bat got stuck in the ground and came off his hands. Though Rohit sprinted well to cross the crease, the ball was faster which hit the stumps before he grounded his feet.

He had scored just 13 runs by then. He was given out after the TV replays were referred and India lost its first wicket. Later skipper Virat Kohli joined the party with Shikhar and both carried the inning ahead. Shikhar Dhawan later knocked his 23rd ODI fifty. By the end of 16 overs, India scored 109 runs after losing one wicket.
