Sri Lankan cricketer Chamara Kaugedera has landed himself in a huge trouble after losing the third ODI against India on August 27 held at Pallekele International Stadium, Balagolla. Sri Lanka Cricket, formally known as Board of Cricket for Sri Lanka, stated that they would be calling up Kapugedera for an enquiry as it was revealed that he went against the decision of the team to bowl first after winning the toss.
Since Upul Tharanga was suspended from the third India vs Sri Lanka ODI, Chamara Kapugedera was stand-in captain for the game. It was the first time that Sri Lanka won the toss in this series. Earlier, Virat Kohli won all the 5 tosses in the series while in both the ODIs, the hosts had to bat first and subsequently suffered heavy defeats.
According to several media reports, ahead of the 3rd ODI, it was decided in the team meeting that if they won the toss, they would chase as it was their strength. As reported by the Indian cricket website Cricbuzz, a member of the Sri Lankan cricket board had said that the bowlers dressed up, however, they were in shock after Kapugedera chose to bat first. The board official was quoted as saying, “he had a brain fade”.
As a result, Virat Kohli and Co. had to bowl first and the pitch conditions helped the men in blue a lot. The Indian bowlers restricted the Lankans within 217 runs in their 50 overs. In return, Rohit Sharma’s whooping century and MS Dhoni’s half-century led team India to victory.
Kapugedera, however, will not be playing the in rest of two games as he had suffered a back injury.
The 4th match of the series will be played on August 31 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The Sri Lankan team has to win the rest two games so as to strengthen their chances of qualifying for the World Cup 2019.
