Chris Gayle’s performance has not been as rampant as we are used to seeing in the initial part of the innings. Nonetheless, he still managed to score the most number of runs for his team Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and add another half-century to his Indian Premier League (IPL) career. The self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ scored 50 runs from 40 deliveries. To everyone’s surprise, Gayle hit only 2 sixes in his innings compared to 6 fours.
However, the two sixes he struck had raw power. His first six came in the last over of the powerplay off Mitchell McClenaghan. The Kiwi pacer bowled a short delivery to Gayle who backed into the crease and struck it over square leg boundary for a maximum. The ball ended up on the roof of Holker stadium and the Umpires had to ask for a new ball to get the match to resume.
Here’s another example of Gayle’s brute force –

Gayle has been in fine form scoring his third half-century of the season and fourth fifty-plus score. The Caribbean opener got out trying to hit the short ball from Ben Cutting over the boundary, but the ball ended up in safe hands of Suryakumar Yadav.

Mumbai Indians (MI) made a comeback after taking Gayle’s wicket. Yuvraj Singh struggled to score on his comeback into the team. Cameos from Karun Nair, Marcus Stoinis and Mayank Agarwal got KXIP to 175 for 5.
