Days after Gambhir Gambhir stepped down as the skipper of Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, the cricketer turned commentator, Sanjay Manjrekar has come forward in his support. Terming Gambhir’s captaincy flawless, Manjrekar stated that the failure of DD’s batting unit has put the former skipper under scrutiny.
While speaking to the news agency PTI, Manjrekar blamed the batting group failing Gautam Gambhir as a captain. He said,
“I don’t think Gambhir’s leadership was a problem, it was just about the batsmen not getting runs, notable failure like (Glenn) Maxwell hurting them. Gambhir, the batsman, thereby had to get runs because the others were failing around him. Gambhir was picked more for his captaincy than his batting, but because the batting group was not clicking, Gambhir the batsman came under scrutiny.”

The former Indian cricketer went to assert that other players of the Delhi camp have to come forward and take responsibilities. He said,
“Shreyas Iyer as captain can change nothing if batting continues to be a problem and their bowling just cannot be dependent on Trent Boult.”

Like a few other franchises, DD revamped the team and picked up Gambhir at his base price in the IPL 2018 mega-auction. He was appointed as the skipper following his track record with the Kolkata Knight Riders. However, the side has failed to impress the fans in this season so far. Out of 6 matches they played, they managed to win just one game and are currently placed at the bottom of the points table.
