It is a truth universally acknowledged that Old Delhi is a treasure trove of rare jewels. Every neighbourhood has a shop offering a tempting range of food items, and none more so than this 100-year-old kulfiwala in Chawri Bazar, who’s known for making gourmet kulfis ‘inside’ fruits.
Kuremal Mohan Lal Kulfi Wale is one of the most popular stalls in Delhi. Kuremal set up a small shop in 1906 with matka full of the creamy dessert in the narrow by-lanes of Old Delhi. He started out with just four varieties of kulfi: Rabdi, Cream, Mango and Sharbat. He used to serve in earthen pots. After his son Mohan Lal took over the business, he expanded the range of kulfis. He introduced stuffed kulfi in the menu, turning it into an iconic eatery.
On our search for eateries nobody can afford to miss, we chanced upon Kuremal Mohan Lal Kulfi Wale, where we spoke to its third generation owner, Manish Sharma. He explained how the famous ‘stuffed kulfi’ came about and the process that goes into making it.

The kulfi is made using a real fruit, the outer layer of which is preserved while the pulp is used to making the kulfi. The fruit is then refilled with milk and pulp and set. Currently, they have 70 to 75 varieties of kulfis that include not just stuffed kulfi, but rabri kulfi and kulfi julpeps as well.
