Kerala High Court lifts ban on Sreesanth imposed by BCCI in connection with IPL spot fixing

Earlier in 2015, Delhi's Patiala House Court discharged all the 36 accused persons including S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila in the IPL-6 spot fixing case

In a major relief for Indian cricketer S Sreesanth, who was out from the Indian squad following his alleged involvement in 2013 IPL spot fixing-case, Kerala High Court on August 7 lifted a ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), news agency ANI shared this news on their official Twitter page. Earlier in 2015, Delhi’s Patiala House Court discharged all the 36 accused persons including S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila in the IPL-6 spot fixing case. Sreesanth was present in the High Court when it gave the verdict, and asserted that he is now determined kick-start his cricket career.

“I am thankful to all who stood with me in my period of distress. Now I will have to display my match fitness. I have a few club tournaments that are coming up. I will use these matches to regain my fitness. Once I prove my worth, then I will aim for selection to the Kerala team,” the 34-year-old said.

“Right now I am not thinking of getting selected to the Indian team, as I have to regain my fitness,” he said, adding “I want to thank all the people who stood with me.”

Timeline:

In 2013, during the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League, Sreesanth was accused of being involved in the spot-fixing while playing for the Rajasthan Royals. Later in July 2015, all the 36 accused, including Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila, were let-off in the case by Patiala House Court.

It was the BCCI Disciplinary Committee headed by the present Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley that slapped a life ban on Sreesanth. Being only the second player from Kerala to represent the country, he has played 27 Tests and 53 One Day Internationals scalping 87 and 75 batsmen respectively.

On February 17, 2017: Sreesanth urged the newly-appointed BCCI supremo, Vinod Rai to revoke his ban.

On March 1: Sreesanth approached the Kerala HC and challenged BCCI’s not to lift the life ban on him despite a Delhi court dropping spot-fixing charges against him.

On March 3: The Kerala High Court has sent a notice to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asking its views on the petition filed by him to lift the ban imposed on him.
