League of her own! Jhulan Goswami becomes first woman cricketer to score 1000 runs & take 150 wickets

Jhulan Goswami also has 1003 runs and 199 wickets in Women's white-ball cricket

Former Indian Women Cricket captain Jhulan Goswami has set a unique record!

Goswami, at the age of 35, has become the first woman cricketer to score 1000 runs and pick up 150+ wickets. She picked up a four-wicket haul and remained 8 not out against South Africa in the 1st ODI to help India seal a historic win by 88 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The tall bowler from Bengal has been an asset for women’s cricket in India for a decade-and-a-half.

Goswami is not only the pace spearhead of the team but also a handy lower-order batswoman. Goswami partnered Mithali Raj for a better part of her record-breaking 214 against England at Taunton in 2002, just a testament to her batting abilities. She now has 1003 runs and 199 wickets in Women’s white-ball cricket. She is just a wicket shy of another feat!

Jenny Gunn from England comes a close second — she has scored 1625 runs but is still 8 wickets away from joining the Indian. That should not take long for the Englishwoman.

Jhulan, who is at the twilight of her career, is expected to push her strengths for a year-and-a-half more. She has inspired many women cricketers to take to the game. For that matter, if BCCI Women were to institute a Hall of Fame for Women cricketer, she would have made the cut, hands down!
