Even after the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) appointed former Indian captain Ravi Shastri as the head coach along with Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid as bowling and batting consultants respectively, they have not received the official contract yet. As per several media reports, the process of drafting of the contracts by the legal team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was underway on July 13. However, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) asked them to stop the process and send the documents over to them as the CoA would be taking calls on contracts to be offered to the coach and support staff.
According to News 18 report, the CoA want no discrepancy in the payment being made to the different assistant coaches. They also want to keep a tab on the entire situation. The reports also quoted a source from the BCCI as saying,”The legal team was preparing the draft for the contracts, but the COA asked for the papers and the final call will be taken by them. They are also set to meet Shastri and it looks like a final call will be taken after taking him into the loop.”
Further, the reports stated that Zaheer Khan’s joining as a support staff was uncertain. This was not the first time that Zak was approached for the role of Team India’s bowling coach. He was consulted last year as well but he refused the offer as he was not given the amount of money (Rs 4 Crore) he demanded. Also, he wasn’t willing to join the team on a full-time basis. And now when he is on board, it’s implausible that the CoA would pay him a salary which is much higher than what Sanjay Bangar gets being a full-time coach.
As per the current contract, Rahul Dravid will be paid Rs 4.5 crore in the first year with an increment of around 10 per cent next year.
Earlier on July 13, the BCCI gave an overseas tag to Zaheer Khan just like Rahul Dravid. His appointment as bowling consultant of the Indian cricket team is also tour specific. The BCCI also mentioned that the appointment of both Zaheer and Dravid was done after consulting new head coach Ravi Shastri.
