India’s women cricketer Mithali Raj breaks another record as she becomes the first Indian cricketer to go past 1,000 runs in ICC Women’s World Cup 2017. It was only the previous match that she broke the record of former England player Charlotte Edwards and became the highest run scorer in Women’s ODI and also reached 6,000 ODI runs. Despite becoming the first Indian cricketer to score more than 1,000 runs in World Cup events she is the fifth batter to do so. New Zealand’s Debbie Hockley (1,501 runs), England’s Janette Brittin (1,299 runs), Charlotte Edwards (1,231 runs) and Belinda Clarke (1,160 runs) are ahead of Mithali who recently achieved this feat.
Mithali has been in good form all along the tournament. She made a fifty in the previous match scoring 69 from 114 balls against Australia which ended up in a losing cause. However, she was blamed by many because of her strike rate which led to a lowly score against the mighty Australian batting lineup who chased down the total without breaking a sweat and won by 8 wickets and 29 balls to spare.
Against the ongoing match against the White Ferns, Raj rescued the team in the virtual quarterfinal as opener Smriti Mandhana got out cheaply once again. Punam Raut who scored a century in the previous game could not do much as she got out for a single digit number (4).
Raj has scored another half-century and her strike rate has improved as well. She is hitting the ball well and determined to take her team to the semi-finals. India and New Zealand are in a do or die situation. Both the teams are desperate to get a win and book a place in the semi-finals of the tournament. India would be aiming for their maiden World Cup win this time around which has been heavily dominated by Australia and England.
