MS Dhoni’s 65 again proved why he is invaluable to the Indian cricket team. Earlier Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field. A Virat Kohli-less India got off to a nightmarish start, scoring 11 for 3 in their powerplay overs. None of the top five got into double-digits, with debutante Shreyas Iyer scoring 9. It finally boiled down to Sri Lanka against MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni guided the team to 112 from 29 for 7, which then looked like a good recovery, but 112 was always going to be less.

The Lankans eventually won the match by 7 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series. Suranga Lakmal was adjudicated the Man of the Match for his splendid 13 for 4 in 10 overs. MS Dhoni was also awarded the most reliable player of the match for his invaluable 65.
Here are the only two sixes of the Indian innings:

Boundaries were hard to come by, but it was MS Dhoni at his brutal best, he hit two monster sixes to light up the stadium and give the fans a reason to cheer. MS Dhoni’s 65 came off 87 balls at a strike rate off 74.71. His innings was studded with 2 sixes and 10 fours. The first six came of Perera, he took it early on the front foot and deposited it beyond the rope. The second six came of left-arm spinner Pathirana, he danced down the track and smashed him towards the cow corner for a six.
These shots show that there is a lot of cricket still left in the old warhorse. It was also a critic-silencing inning.
