Maharashtra, a state known for producing legendary cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Zaheer Khana and Sanjay Manjraker among others, on January 30 witnessed another outstanding performance on the cricket field when a 14-year-old student Tanishq Gavate smashed an unbeaten 1,045* in an unofficial cricket tournament.
Tanishq Gavate, who came to bat on January 29, played for over two days to register this unique feat. Gavate’s outstanding knock came during the semi-final match of the tournament at the Yashwantrao Chavan English Medium School ground in Koparkhairne.
According to a PTI report, Gavate played on a ground which has a leg-side boundary of 60-65 yards, while the offside boundary was 50 yards. Gavate’s mammoth innings was laced with 149 boundaries and 67 sixes.
Gavate achieved this feat while representing Yashwantrao Chavan XI, a team made up of the players from the academy run by his coach Manish.
However, a senior Mumbai Cricket Association official told PTI that the tournament, titled Navi Mumbai Shield U14, has not been recognised by the MCA.
The coach, however, claimed leather ball was used in the tournament and bowlers bowled overarm.
A couple of years ago, a local boy from Kalyan, Pranav Dhanawade set a world record when he scored 1,009 runs in the Bhandari Cup inter-school tournament.
Pranav scored 1,009 not out, from 323 balls while representing KC Gandhi High School of the Kalyan administrative district in 2016. Pranav broke the 116-year-old record of 628 not out, set by the English schoolboy AEJ Collins in 1899.
