Team India registered an emphatic victory over the visitors Sri Lanka on Day 4 of the second Test match at Nagpur on November 27 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Resuming the Day 4 play at 21/1, Sri Lanka lost the overnight batsmen Dimuth Karunaratne (18) after adding 13 runs to team’s total. Indian opening batsman Murali Vijay, who had scored a century in India’s inning, took the ‘impossible’ catch while fielding at the short-leg. This catch broke Sri Lanka’s confidence as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and got bowled out for just 166 runs in their second innings.

Sri Lanka began the day at 384 behind with nine wickets in hand and needed to bat for about five sessions to save the Test. However, the visitors failed to step up to the pressure and folded up before the tea break on the fourth day at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

Captain Dinesh Chandimal (61) waged a lone battle as he shared a 58-run stand for the eighth wicket with Suranga Lakmal (31) to delay the inevitable.

Indian bowlers hunted in packs with all of them getting into wickets column. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (4/63), left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (2/28), pacers Umesh Yadav (2/30) and Ishant Sharma (2/43) all dominated the Sri Lankan batsmen.

Ashwin, by taking four wickets, became the fastest bowler to take 300 wickets in Test history. The 31-year-old, who bagged eight wickets in the Test, achieved this feat in 54 matches, surpassing the record of Australia’s Denis Lillee who took 56 Tests to cross the milestone.

Earlier, Indian skipper Virat Kohli scored his 5th double century as India declared their first innings on a mammoth 610/6 on Sunday, taking a 405-run lead. Team India won the game by 239 runs and an innings.
