PSL Spot-Fixing Scandal: Nasir Jamshed Banned For 10 Years

Jamshed, who played 48 one-day internationals and two tests, has been suspended from all forms of cricket

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on August 18 announced that former Pakistan batsman Nasir Jamshed has been banned for 10 years by an anti-corruption tribunal for his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal that rocked the Pakistan Super League in 2017.

According to ESPNcricinfo, this is the second punishment for Jamshed in the last two years. In December 2017, he was handed a one-year ban following his non-cooperation with investigation agency.

According to PCB, Jamshed, who played 48 one-day internationals and two tests, has been suspended from all forms of cricket and he will not be allowed to be involved with cricket administration even after his period of the ban is over.

PCB has termed Jamshed as the “lynchpin” in the scandal.

“The tribunal has reached the verdict that the PCB’s multiple charges against Nasir Jamshed have been proved and he was banned for 10 years,” Reuters quoted PCB’s legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi as saying.

According to Samaa.tv, the left-handed batsman has been convicted on five accounts:

Deliberately performing poorly in games which may affect the result
Ensuring specific incidents occur during matches
Agreeing to take bribes to affect match results
Promoting any of the above charges
Lying to the cricket board’s vigilance team

Earlier, batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were handed five-year bans for their role in the scandal, while paceman Mohammad Irfan and all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz received respective suspensions for 12 and two months.

According to PCB’s chargesheet, Nasir convinced four cricketers through an agent, Muhammad Yousuf, to get involved in the spot-fixing scandal in the second season of the PSL in February last year.
