Ravichandran Ashwin backs Virender Sehwag to replace Anil Kumble as team India coach

Ashwin disclosed that Sehwag used to hate team meetings as he did not believe in playing according to the team nor as per any strategy

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s frontline spinner and a winner of many awards is currently in England for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, where team India is defending its title it won way back in 2013 in the same country. India beat Pakistan in their opener yesterday at Birmingham comprehensively by 124 runs. Yuvraj Singh was awarded the man of the match after he scored a blitzkrieg 50. BCCI, meanwhile has asked applicants to apply for the post of India’s next coach. Anil Kumble has apparently seeked for a hike in pay, which did not go down well with the BCCI. Virender Sehwag’s application read:

His application said that he is ‘the mentor and a coach of Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League and has played with all these (Indian) boys before’.

According to an Indian Express (IE) report, the BCCI has asked him to send an elaborated version of the application. One of the sources in IE’s sources in the board said,”Sehwag being Sehwag has sent his application in two lines. However, he has been asked to attach his CV along with his application. It will the first time he will be appearing for an interview.”

Meanwhile, this is what Shane Warne said speaking to Mid-Day.

“I am very expensive, I don’t think they (BCCI) can afford me. Virat Kohli and me can have a good partnership, but as I said, I am very, very expensive,” Mid-Day quoted Shane Warne as saying.

Applicants have applied in numbers, according to the grapevine 49 applicants have already applied for the post. But it seems Ravichandran Ashwin is already backing someone.

Speaking to Cricket humourist Vikram Sathaye in the first episode of his digital premium show ‘What The Duck 2’, Ashwin revealed how Sehwag used to stay behind closed doors when it came to formulating team plans. The show will stream its first episode on Viu, the video-on-demand service on June 5.

A look back at Virat Kohli’s captains knock against arch-rivals Pakistan.

Ashwin disclosed that Sehwag used to hate team meetings as he did not believe in playing according to the team nor as per any strategy. In fact, Sehwag’s whims had no boundaries. During the 2011 WC, Sehwag asked a rather nonsensical question which threw off everybody at a meeting. Sehwag had apparently mentioned that he was aware that all players were eligible for six complimentary passes, but were given only three. Thus, to solve the issue, he decided to take matters into his own hands and mentioned that come what may, before the toss, the team must be handed over the remaining passes.
