Spectator takes stunning one-handed catch during PAK vs NZ 3rd ODI, leaves Martin Guptill impressed

The man has been identified as Craig Dougherty who is a local builder. He received a cash prize of $ 50,000 for this spectacular catch

The third ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand at the University Oval, Dunedin, turned out to be an exciting event for the Black Caps and a cricket fan who was enjoying the live match. The Kiwis defeated Pakistan by a massive 183 runs and won the series. During the match, a man in the crowd took a stunning one-handed catch and became $50,000 richer.

A beer-making company named Tui has been promoting one-handed catch by the spectators across different cricket venues in New Zealand since 2015 ICC World Cup. The rules are pretty simple. The spectators have to don company’s orange coloured T-shirt. Whenever a batsman hits the ball into the crowd for a six, the spectator has to grab it by one hand to win a cash prize.

And the same incident happened during third New Zealand vs Pakistan ODI in Dunedin. New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first. After facing 4 dot balls in the very first over, Kiwi opener Martin Guptill hit Mohammad Amir for a huge six over the deep mid-wicket area. The ball crossed the boundary while a spectator, donning the Tui T-shirt, grabbed the ball with one hand. Guptill and Collin Munro were amused to see that catch and applauded his efforts.

As reported by stuff.co.nz, Dougherty couldn’t believe on what he did. He said,

“When I saw it coming, I thought ‘there’s no way that’s going to carry, that’s not going to carry, that’s not going to carry.’ That’s probably why I looked so casual, and then just stuck the hand out and it stuck. I still can’t believe I caught it, but it’s awesome that I did catch it.”

It has also been learned that this is not the first time that Dougherty took a one-handed catch at this venue. During the World Cup 2015 match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, he did it for the first time. He is an all-rounder who plays third-grade club cricket in Dunedin.
