Under 19 Cricket World Cup has been the turning point for many budding cricketers in the past. The World Cup has been instrumental in producing some of the finest players like Virat Kohli, Mitchell Marsh, Hashim Amla, Ross Taylor, Dwayne Bravo and Umar Gul among others.
From Yuvraj Singh, son of Yograj Singh (in 2000 edition) to Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of West Indian great Shivnarine Chanderpaul (in 2014 edition), the U19 World Cups have seen quite a few sons of international cricketers in action.
Let’s have a look at some of star cricketers’ sons who represented their country in past U-19 World Cups:
Yuvraj Singh
Son of former Indian fast bowler Yograj Singh, Yuvraj was named the Player of the Tournament in the 2000 U19 World Cup, Sri Lanka for his all-round performance. Following Yuvraj’s performance in U-19 WC, the left-hander received a call for the national squad.
Stuart Binny
Son of 1983 World Cup star Roger Binny, Stuart played for India in the U-19 World Cup in 2002 edition, which Australia won after defeating South Africa in the finals. Binny was first picked for India’s ODI team for the tour of New Zealand 2014. He played his first One-day International on 28 January 2014. He made his Test debut in India’s tour to England in 2014.
Stephen Craig Cook
The son of former Test player Jimmy Cook represented South Africa in U-19 World Cup in 2002 edition. In 2016, he made his Test debut and became the 6th South African (and 102nd Test player) to score a century on his debut game.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul
Son of Windies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the left-handed Tagenarine played the U-19 World Cup for West Indies in 2014. On 14 March 2017, the father-son duo registered a record after having notched half-centuries in the same first-class match.
Corbin Bosch
South African player Tertius Bosch’s son played for South Africa U-19 World Cup team in 2014. The all-rounder made his first-class debut for Titans in 2017.
Hashen Ramanayake
22-year-old Hashen is a son of former Sri Lankan pace bowler Champaka Ramanayake. He was a part of Sri Lankan U-19 World Cup team in 2014. He made his first-class debut against Tamil Union Cricket in 2015.
The upcoming U-19 World Cup edition is going to be no different. Austin Waugh, the son of former Australia captain Steve Waugh and Thando Ntini, son of South African Makhaya Ntini, will be among those looking to display their potential in a tournament.
Austin Waugh first grabbed the spotlight after he smashed an unbeaten 122 in the final of the Under-17 National Championships in 2016.
Makhaya Ntini’s son Thando Ntini made headlines after he grabbed 4/56 in his debut for the South Africa U19 team against the Windies earlier this year.
The 2018 U-19 World Cup edition will start in New Zealand from 13 January and will continue till 3 February 2018.
