Some like me were not even born when Kapil Dev stood at the balcony of the iconic Lords and lifted the World Cup in 1983. When a bunch of fringe players from India had conquered the cricketing world. It was 28 years later when some of us had acquired a sound idea and knowledge of the game when Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit a six in front of a packed stadium at Wankhade in 2011 to lend India its second World Cup crown, what a moment for Sachin Tendulkar and the rest. The memories of that win is still so fresh in our memories, who can forget it.
India in 2011 had a good balanced team, they had the experience of Sachin, Yuvraj, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh, apart from Zaheer and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. But they had a very young Virat Kohli as well, who played well throughout the tournament was looking to win it for his idol Sachin Tendulkar who had never won a World Cup and this was his last. So there was a lot at stake for Team India. India had defeated arch rivals in the semi finals to set up a final clash with the Emarald Isle nation, who were in red hot form. The finale was slated for Wankhade, Sachin’s home. Hence it was more intriguing to see if Sachin can sign off on a high. The stage was set and the stadium was ‘packed to the rafters’.
Sri Lanka won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. They piled on a score of 274, courtesy Mahela Jayawardena’s glorious ton. It did not look to be an ominous total, but India lost two early wickets that set them back. Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag fell quickly but then it was Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir who steadies the run chase and brought it on track, before Kohli fell for 35. That is when to everyone’s surprise Yuvraj Singh did not walk out to the middle, instead captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped up to the plate and took guard. He along with Gambhir stitched together a partnership of 109 runs, which proved to be very important. Mahendra Singh Dhini, then in his signatore style hit a six down town to finish things. India had lifted the World Cup crown for the second time. Yuvraj Singh was adjudicated man of the series for his contribution with the ball and the bat.
