Indian skipper Virat Kohli yet again enters the record books of Indian cricket during the first India vs Sri Lanka Test match in Kolkata on November 16. For the first time in his Test career, Kohli was dismissed for a duck while batting at the Eden Gardens.
After rain delayed the match by more than 4 hours, the game finally started with Sri Lanka winning the toss and putting India to bat first. Openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan stepped onto the field, however, the innings opened to a terrible start.
The Lankan bowling attack was brutal enough to push the Indians under pressure right in the beginning. Pacer Suranga Lakmal removed KL Rahul in the first ball of the game and provided an early breakthrough for his team. Later, he went on to dismiss two more batsmen including Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan. This is for the first time that Kohli gone for a duck while playing a Test match in Kolkata.
Here’s the video:
In the 11th over, Lakmal bowled a good length delivery to Kohli who tried to defend. The ball hit Kohli’s pads and the Lankans appealed for LBW. Umpire Nigel Llong raised his finger while Kohli decided to go for the Decision Review System (DRS).
After referring the TV replay, it was learned that the ball swung towards the leg stump hitting the back-pad. Since the third umpire referred umpire’s call, Kohli had to return to the dressing room after scoring none off 11 balls.
Heavy rains played a game of hide-and-seek in Kolkata during the first Test. The play was interrupted several times due to heavy showers. The Lankan bowlers could deliver only 11.5 overs after which the game of the first day was called off due to bad light. Suranga Lakmal bowled a phenomenal spell of 6 overs where he took 3 wickets without conceding a single run. India will resume their batting from 17/3 on Day 2.
