Critics are now increasingly pointing out that Dhoni should retire and give someone else a chance to get ready for ICC World Cup 2019 since the former captain has struggled to sway matches on his own. Once dubbed as modern day cricket’s ‘best finisher’, Dhoni has lost his sheen, according to critics, and has gone past his prime when he used to have an incredible batting finish. But former South African all-rounder has a different set of views on the matter as he has come out in support of Dhoni.
In an interview with TOI Klusener shared his opinion on the matter, he said,“It’s always easy to call for somebody’s stepping down. You have got to look at who is going to fill that gap? Is that person going to be better than Dhoni straightaway? He is one of the best finishers to ever play the game. Why would you want to get rid of him? I think India would be foolish to do so. He still has got a lot to offer,”
Klusener was one of the fiercest all-rounders of his time and also one of the best finishers. The Proteas all-rounder finished matches for his team by snatching a win from the jaws of defeat.
Klusener is currently involved with Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) team Lyca Kova Kings. He has been coaching them for their second season. This is not his first job as a coach as he previously worked with Hollywoodbets Dolphins from South Africa. He even coached Zimbabwe’s national team for a brief period of time.
Klusener bashed critics who asked Dhoni to retire by presenting a logical argument. India first needs to groom a wicketkeeper-batsman who can fill in the void created by Dhoni’s retirement. In Test cricket Wriddhiman Saha has been doing a fantastic job; in ODIs they need someone as ferocious as him to strike a balance in the team.
