Teenage off-spinner Washington Sundar starred with the ball during India’s 17-run win over Bangladesh at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on March 14. The off-spinner returned with figures of 3/22 to break the backbone of the Bangladeshi batting line-up, helping India defend 176/3 as well as qualify for the final of the Nidahas T20 tri-series.
The 18-year-old picked up the wickets of Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar. With 7 wickets so far, Sundar is now the leading wicket-taker in the Nidahas Trophy 2018 tri-series.
“When you get the opportunity to represent your country, you need to face those challenges and when you win those challenges you get a lot of satisfaction. That is how I look at batting powerplays. It is a very good feeling when you bowl under 6 every game,” Sundar said during the post-match presentation.
“Both the teams are pretty good especially in the limited overs. This tournament has been going very well for me. If I can play to my potential or strength, then we can win the tournament,” the offie added.
Earlier, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma (89) and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan (35) were in sync and played strong, putting up a 70-run stand. Skipper Rohit, who was out of form for quite a long time, returned with a bang and slammed his 13th T20 fifty (off 42 balls).
Chasing a healthy 177, Bangladesh could only manage to score 159/6. Mushfiqur Rahim was the top-scorer for Bangladesh with 72 not out.
