Citing poor security concerns, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has rejected the proposed tour to Pakistan. The security concerns were raised by the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) after which the WICB took this decision.
A report presented by the FICA stated that the security conditions are “at an extremely elevated level” in Pakistan and asserted that “an acceptable level of participant security and safety cannot be expected or guaranteed”.
FICA provided the security advisory to the WICB through its security consultant Eastern Star International (ESI). ESI also provides security to the other national cricket boards like Cricket Australia, New Zealand Cricket, ECB and International Cricket Council.
According to ESPNcricinfo report, both the nations would discuss the possibilities of conducting the at least two T20 matches in Florida, USA on March 19 and 20. Earlier this month, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had already asked the Pakistan team to play a T20 series in Florida in the United States. This proposal was sent to PCB as a precondition by the Carribean board.
On January 11, the WCIB announced a seven-week tour to Pakistan comprising two T20Is, three ODIs, and three Tests to played across five venues from March to May 2017.
In 2009, Pakistan hosted its last cricket series against Sri Lanka but unfortunately, the visitors’ team bus was attacked by twelve armed terrorists in Lahore in which six players were injured and six Pakistani policemen along with two civilians were killed.
