CWG 2018: Mirabai Chanu Wins First Gold Medal For India With Record-breaking Lift — WATCH

CWG 2018: Mirabai Chanu attempted lifting 107 kg and 110 kg even after winning the gold medal in 48 kg category and succeeded

India’s World Champion weightlifter Mirabai Chanu breaks her own snatch record in Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2018 at Gold Coast, Australia. Chanu won the first gold medal for India in CWG 2018. She lifted a total of 196 kgs — a combination of 86 kg (snatch) and 110 kg (clean and jerk).

Chanu created a record by lifting 86 kgs in snatch in the 48 kg category. The 23-year-old was ranked first going into the clean and jerk round. She was amazed by her own performance after winning the gold medal and asked her coach how much was she able lift in her final attempt.

She was 10 kgs ahead of Mauritian weightlifter Roilya Ranaivosova and Canadian Amanda Braddock in her group. In the end, Ranaivosova won the silver medal and Sri Lanka’s Dinusha Gomes won bronze.

Chanu Mirabai, you !

The 23 year-old claims India’s first gold of #GC2018 with a dominating performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting division.

Mirabai’s attempt at 80 kg and 84 kg were untroubled as she did it with ease. She needed just one clean and jerk to win the first gold medal for India. Even in clean and jerk round she lifted 103 kg and 107 kg without breaking a sweat. She attempted 110 kg in her third attempt and aced it as well.

She previously lifted in the 85 kg category in the Weight Lifting Championships 2017 in Anaheim, USA on November 30. This was a record-breaking lift too which included 85 kg (snatch) and 109 kg (clean and jerk). That’s why hopes were high from Chanu on Day 1 of CWG 2018 and she lived up to them all those expectations.
