A whitewash in the Test series wasn’t an ideal start to the tour by the New Zealanders. As they gear up for the ODI series, the first thing that the Kiwis would be hoping is to get a win under their belt. India, on the other hand, will create a world record when they take the field on Sunday afternoon. Playing their 900th ODI, a most by any cricket playing nation, India would look to dominate. While Dharamsala is all set to host the first game of the series, here’s how India has fared in ODIs so far.
India played its first ODI against England on July 13, 1974. The match played between the two countries was the 12th game in the history of cricket. England defeated India by four wickets. Since then, India have gone on to play 898 matches and have won 454 of those. Despite 399 losses, 7 tied games and no result on 39 occasions, India have a win percentage of more than 50. Interestingly, Sachin Tendulkar has played 463 games out of the 899 matches. Tendulkar alone has represented India in 51.44% of its total ODIs.
India’s best win record is against Bangladesh (Test-playing nation). Out of the 32 matches played between the two, India have won 26, lost 5 and no result in one instance. India’s record against the world champions Australia hasn’t been that impressive. Out of 123 games, India have won only 41 and lost 72 games with no result for 10 matches. India have been involved in seven tied games, four have been played under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, two under Mohammad Azharuddin and one under Sachin Tendulkar. A match between India and Pakistan played at Hyderabad in 1986/87 was tied but India were declared winners as they lost fewer wickets in the game.
As far as highest score in ODI is concerned, India posted 418/5 against the West Indies on December 8, 2011. In the match played at Indore, Virender Sehwag scored 219 runs and India won the match by 153 runs. India’s lowest score came against Sri Lanka in a match played at Sharjah on October 29, 2000. Chasing Sri Lanka’s target of 300, India were bundled up for mere 54 runs and Sri Lanka won the game by 245 runs. India’s most successful run chase yet comes against the mighty Australians. On October 16, 2013, at Jaipur, India chased Australia’s target of 360 runs. Thanks to centuries from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India scored 362 runs in 43.3 overs.
As for individual records, Chetan Sharma and Kapil Dev are the only bowlers to take a hat-trick in ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma have all scored double centuries in the limited overs format. Sharma has achieved the feat twice and his score of 264 against Sri Lanka is the highest in ODIs by any batsman. 23 captains have led India so far and out of those, MS Dhoni has been the most successful captain for India. In 194 matches as a captain, he has won 107 and lost 72 games. His win percentage as a captain is 59.56.

Sourav Ganguly holds a unique record of winning four Man of the Match Awards consecutively. He achieved this feat against Pakistan in 1997. India have lifted the World Cup twice in 1983 and in 2011. India have been involved in nine whitewash series wins (3 matches or more) and two have come against New Zealand. Will India make it three in the upcoming series?
The remainder of the series will be played at Delhi, Mohali, Ranchi and Visakhapatnam. In-form Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested for the ODIs and have been replaced by Jayant Yadav and Axar Patel. Suresh Raina, who has been called for national duty after a gap of a year, will not play the first match as he is still recovering from a viral fever.

Led by Kane Williamson, the Kiwi squad comprises of Ross Taylor, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Anton Devcich, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, James Neesham, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee and BJ Watling.
