The upcoming FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia will witness Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the first time. With VAR technology, referees at the FIFA World Cup 2018 finals, to be held from June 14 – July 15, will be able to dish out red cards for off-the-ball incidents spotted by VAR technology.
For VAR system to work, a video assistant referee team will be formed and they will support the match officials during all 64 matches, FIFA.com reported.
“With the use of the technology, the mistakes will be diminished and there will be more justice in football,” FIFA. com quoted Nuno Gomes, a former Portuguese national player as saying.

How will VAR be used?
Goals: The role of the VAR is to assist the referee to determine whether the goal is clean.
Penalty: VAR technology will ensure that no wrong decisions are made while assigning a penalty.
Direct Red Card: VAR technology will also ensure that no wrong decisions will be made while sending off a player.
Mistaken Identity: With VAR, referees won’t be able to send off the wrong player. The VAR will inform the referee so that the correct player can be disciplined.
FIFA World Cup 2018 will kick-start in Russia from June 14.
