Former Indian batting star Gautam Gambhir has been waiting for his chance for the past 2 and a half years.
Last time he played for the Indian team was when India were playing in England in 2014. He scored a terrible 3 runs in both the innings. After that, he was dropped from the team.
After waiting for years, this could be his chance. According to India Today, coach Anil Kumble has called for the batsman to be backup opener as KL Rahul’s availability for Kolkata Test against New Zealand came in jeopardy . Rahul has pulled a hamstring and was struggling in the Kanpur test against England.
According to the reports, Gambhir will appear for a fitness test.
Gambhir has been in a great form at domestic level, scoring runs continuously. In Duleep trophy, he scored 4 back-to-back half century. But, the selectors picked out-of-form Shikhar Dhawan instead.
Gambhir had tweeted his dismay.
“I’m disappointed but not defeated; I’m cornered but not a coward. Grit my partner, courage my pride…for, I must fight, I must fight…” he had said in a tweet.
This could be Gambhir’s chance finally. But the bad thing is that Gambhir was reportedly considered as a replacement for an injured player.
Gambhir has a glorious past. He was a regular opener with Virender Sehwag and had had played instrumental role in many wins.
He has scored 4,021 runs in 54 test matches. His batting average has been a decent 44.18 runs.
He has been in a pick of a form lately in domestic circuit. He is also scoring tons of runs in Indian Premier League.
It is understandable that selectors are placing their bets on the younger lot. But Gambhir has a lot of cricket left in him. And he has proved that in domestic circuit. Hope, selectors will soon give the legend his due.
