President of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic celebrated wildly as her country advanced to the semi-finals for the first time since 1998. Croatia’s first female president celebrated from the stands as well as danced with the football team as her country thrashed Russia 4-3 in the FIFA World Cup quarter-final match. Seated beside FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev in the VIP section, she was seen raising her hands and doing a little victory dance to celebrated Croatia’s second goal.
This was not the first time that her support to the team has made headlines. In an earlier match against Denmark, a picture of her cheering Croatia from the stands along with other fans has gone viral.
She even opted to fly economy-class with the rest of her countrymen to Russia to attend the quarterfinals.
The win for Croatia comes despite playing with an injured goalkeeper. Things looked sunny for Russia in the first-half when they scored the first goal of the match. However, their celebrations could only last 8 minutes as Croatia scored an equalizer. In the extra time, Croatia seemed to finally take the game home after they scored another goal, taking the scorecard to 2-1. However, Russia were able to keep their hopes alive after they scored an equalizer in the second-half of the extra time.
Croatia will next face England in the semi-final match on July 11.
