Goalkeeper Buffon made 175 appearances for his country in a 20-year-long career – lifting the World Cup in 2006

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who recently made headlines after he was spotted weeping when Italy failed to reach the World Cup, surprised a supporter during UEFA Champions League between Juventus and Barcelona on November 23.

Soon after the match ended in a draw, Buffon, who plays for Juventus, pulled off his orange shorts and ran towards the crowd cheering for him and gave it to one his followers sitting in the crowd.

Gianluigi Buffon, who announced his retirement from the International arena after Italy failed to reach the World Cup, took to his Twitter account to explain why he gave the supporter his shorts.

He wrote: “This is only a point tonight, but it’s a good point. It’s always a pleasure and an honour to play against great champions, like Ivan Rakitic.”

On November 13, FIFA witnessed a major turnaround after four-time champions Italy failed to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1958. A tearful Gianluigi Buffon said after the match that he was “sorry for all of Italian football”.

“It’s a shame my last official game coincided with the failure to qualify for the World Cup. Blame is shared equally among everyone. There can’t be scapegoats.”
