Luka Modric taking home the Ballon d’Or has ended the decade-long dominance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Croatian skipper was ecstatic after winning the trophy and revealed that ‘the first night, it will probably be near his bed’.
It has been a dream run for the 33-year-old who has won UEFA Men’s player of the year award, The Best FIFA Men’s Player and Ballon d’Or in the same year.
Modric explained what the trophy meant to him at the award ceremony in Paris:
“As a kid we all have dreams. My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies. The Ballon d’Or was more than just a dream for me and it is really an honor and a privilege to hold this trophy. 2018 is a dream year for me. Throughout my career I realized hard work, persistence and belief in yourself in difficult moments are the foundations of success (sic).”
The midfielder led Croatia to their first ever FIFA World Cup final in 2018. Croatia were underdogs going into the tournament expected to pull off a few upsets, but they ended up registering their best finish in the tournament’s history. The Real Madrid midfielder also won the Golden Ball for his magnificent run in the tournament.

From being labelled too weak to play by coaches, to being called the ‘worst signing’ of the year in 2012, Modric has seen several lows. But his talent and grit paved the way for a better future, one where he is considered one of the best midfielders to have ever play the game.
