Gautam Gambhir, who is currently in news for being excluded in the T20 squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the Australia series, on October 3 took to Twitter to express his views on patriotism. The left-handed opening batsman said that ‘patriotism should not come with a shelf life’.
With his tweet, Gambhir emphasised that the countrymen should remain patriotic throughout the year and not just on January 26, August 15 or October 2 which are observed as Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti respectively.
Gambhir, who helped Team India win the 2011 World Cup, posted a tweet on his official Twitter handle and wrote: “Seems Aug 15th, January 26th & Oct 2nd have 24 hrs shelf life/expiry date. Not expecting 365-days jingoism but subtle patriotism shud always throb.”

Earlier in September this year, Gautam Gambhir grabbed the spotlight after he announced to fund the education of 5-year-old Zohra whose father Abdul Rasheed was martyred in an attack by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag. A photo of the crying Zohra at her father’s funeral went viral on social media. Later, on September 5, Gautam Gambhir tweeted that he would fund martyred Kashmiri Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Abdul Rasheed’s daughter Zohra’s education for her lifetime.
Gambhir had publically stated that Zohra was like his own daughters Aazeen & Anaiza.
