The first super over of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 10 was as exciting as ever. The last over drama between both the teams led the game to super over after Mumbai Batting line-up collapsed in 153 runs and they fell short by one run to achieve the target. But Jasprit Bumrah turned the entire game upside down with his unconventional bowling skills and defeated Gujarat Lions by 5 runs in the super over.
Mumbai had to bat first and Kieron Pollard and Jos Buttler came into open. 11 runs came off the first two balls as Pollard, who took the strike, hit a four and then a six. But unfortunately, Mumbai lost all the two wickets in the next two balls. They had put 11 runs on the board and now Gujarat Lions needed 12 runs to win from the super over.
For Gujarat, Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch came in to chase the target while from MI team management and skipper Rohit Sharma agreed to deploy Jasprit Bumrah for the bowling attack. Bumrah began the over with a no ball and then with a wide which gave two extra runs in zero balls but the way he bowled his next 5 balls was truly amazing. Gujarat needed 7 runs off the last ball but opening pair including McCullum and Finch could steal just a single and finally lost the game.
Earlier, the Gujarat Lions won the toss and opted to bat first, they posted 153 after an early collapse. Thanks to a blitzkrieg by Andrew Tye and James Faulkner, who put on 43 runs off 19 balls. Mumbai Indians came out to bat, Parthiv Patel was breathtaking from the outset, he, in fact, looked to be playing on a different planet along with Jos Buttler who at the other end got run out for 9 runs but that did not affect the run rate as Parthiv Patel kept playing his shots.
The find of the tournament Nitish Rana started in a flying manner but his innings was cut short by Ankit Soni, who dismissed him for 16. It was Parthiv Patel who held the innings together looked at his very best, till he knocked one of James Faulkner to Karthik. He scored 70 off 43 balls. Faulkner changed the tide of the match in that one 14th over by picking up 2 wickets. Pollard was calm, looking off colour but Krunal Pandya kept ticking away at the target. Ankit Soni was very economical he gave away 16 runs in 4 overs and picked up one wicket. Raina too was decent considering it is the shortest format, he gave 28 runs in 4 overs. Pollard’s short stay ended soon when he was caught in the deep for 10 runs.
By the end, The Gujarat Lions were successful to pick some handful of wickets and it looked like the men in orange will somehow turn the game in their favour and they did the same. It was 11 runs needed from the last six balls and Irfan Pathan had the bowl. Krunal Pandya welcomed him with a six. Unfortunately, Mumbai had their 9th blow in the third ball of the 20th over as Jasprit Bumrah got run out. But Lasith Malinga had to face the last ball of the over when 1 runs needed off just 1 ball.
1 run was needed off 1 ball for MI to win the game and Lasith Malinga had to face the last ball of the over. Malinga stepped out of the crease and tried to hit a biggie but he missed the shot. They tried to take the last single but Krunal Pandya got run out as Ravindra Jadeja directly hit the wickets. Mumbai ended up scoring 153 runs and both the teams had to play a super over in which finally, MI clinched victory from Gujrat Lions’ claws.
