Rising Pune Supergiant’s (RPS) wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni is set to break the ‘world record’ in the coming matches of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017. Dhoni might go on to break the record of taking the most number of catches in the shortest version of the game. Dhoni is just one wicket away from breaking the record of former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara who holds the record for most catches in the shortest version of the games.
One must note that theses statistics include catches from each and every T20 game the players have played whether they are T20 Internationals or IPL, Big Bash League (BBL), Pakistan Super League (PSL) and others. But, before Dhoni etches his name in the history books, he has Dinesh Karthik on his tail with 120 catches.
But, Dhoni will be achieving this feat in the most number of matches. Dhoni is one of the best wicketkeepers of all-time and he has shown this with his innovation on the field and his trademark back flick runouts which other wicketkeepers fail to do.
As far as the number of dismissals is concerned Dhoni still has a long way to go as Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal is leading the table with 200 dismissals to his name.
Let’s look at the table
Player Name | Span | Matches | Innnings | Dismissals | Catches | Stumpings |
Kumar Sangakkara | 2004-2017 | 235 | 177 | 180 | 123 | 57 |
MS Dhoni | 2006-2017 | 260 | 247 | 185 | 122 | 63 |
Dinesh Karthik | 2006-2017 | 216 | 189 | 166 | 120 | 46 |
Kamran Akmal | 2005-2017 | 197 | 189 | 200 | 110 | 90 |
Naman Ojha | 2007-2017 | 162 | 159 | 125 | 103 | 22 |
All the players featured in the list are playing in leagues across the world. Dhoni will be going back and forth moving up and down the order in the list. RPS still have 2 league matches to play as they are currently in 3rd spot, they are likely to qualify for playoffs with 8 wins from 12 games. On the other hand, Karthik has just one match to play for Gujarat Lions.
