Royal Challengers skipper Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are undoubtedly the best fielders in the world. It is very rare that either of them drops a catch, let alone commit a mistake together. Against a do-or-die match against Delhi Daredevils (DD), the confusion between the two led to a dropped catch, and that too of skipper Shreyas Iyer. In the 10th over of the innings, Iyer tried to hit the ball for a boundary and took the aerial route. What happened next was pretty unusual.
The ball hung up in the air after Iyer’s miscued shot. Despite Iyer aiming for the stands, the ball could only cross the 30-yard circle. De Villiers was positioning himself to take the catch while Kohli was running from long off to claim it. De Villiers faltered as he saw Kohli coming in and dropped the catch.

If RCB had any realistic shot at making the IPL playoffs, you might have just seen the world’s two greatest modern batsmen knock each other out in a collision for a catching opportunity. Instead, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli let a skier fall tamely between them.

A collision between the two was averted but at the cost of a dropped catch. The two shared a laugh after the incident as one of them could have called for the catch. Iyer had only scored 21 runs when he got a second chance. He was dropped twice in that over. Before De Villiers, Mohammed Siraj’s diving effort at the deep mid-wicket went in vain.

However, De Villiers made up for the dropped chance with a stupendous catch of in-form batsman Rishabh Pant at deep midwicket position. He dived in to take the catch and rolled over on follow through to pull it off. Pant got out after scoring 61 runs from 34 deliveries. Whereas Iyer failed to make the most of the dropped catches and scored an ordinary knock of 32 runs from 35 balls.
