Lok Sabha rarely witnesses pin-drop silence even when an MP is speaking. In the budget session of Lok Sabha, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan stood up to congratulate India Under-19 team for their triumph over Australia in the final of U-19 World Cup 2018. But, as usual, without listening to what she had to say, Members of Parliament (MPs) started interrupting her by shouting before she could even finish her sentence.
Mahajan silenced the raucous MPs with her statement. Here’s what she said,
“Sadasyagan, mujhe sabha ko ye suchit karte hue.. please, please listen to me! New Zealand me ayojit ICC Under-19, this is the future of India. You have to congratulate them. ICC Under World Cup me bharat ki 19 varsh se kum umar wali cricket team ne 3 February, 2018 ko final match me Australia ko harakar chauthi baar Under-19 World Cup jeeta hai. Ye sabha yuva bharatiya team ko unki utakrishta upalabdhi ke liye badhai deti hai aur unke bhavi prayaso me safalta ki kaamna karti hai, dhanyawaad.“
When MPs realised that she was congratulating India’s Under-19 team for their record-breaking victory, they stopped interfering. After listening to her, they lauded the effort of the team.
