The Indian cricket team are currently leading the 3-match bilateral Test series against Sri Lanka by 2-0 after they brutally defeated the hosts in the Colombo Test. In the first match, Virat Kohli and Co. smashed the injury stricken Rangana Herath-led Lankan team by a massive 304 runs while in the second, the hosts lost the game by an innings and 34 runs. Though the visiting Indian cricket team is having a gala time in the neighbouring island nation, however, the home team has disappointed the locals with their performance.
In such a situation where the unhappy fans leave the stadium in the middle of the game, the Cricket Sri Lanka officials are trying their best to anchor the audience. Perhaps that’s the reason behind something unusual that was witnessed on the grounds of Sri Lankan stadiums during the games. In the first two Tests against India, a few women came out to serve drinks during the breaks.
According to several media reports, a Sri Lanka Cricket official has revealed the reason behind this. Some Lankan leading daily quoted him saying,”Ground must look beautiful.”
On the other hand, Bhairav Shanth, the Co-founder of the event management company taking care of the match in this series, said that they wanted to try ‘something new’. He said,”We wanted to do something new to the old tradition and this idea struck to us. The girls were serving drinks to the players in Galle Test also. They will be in action at the Kandy and all other Limited over games also.”
Such arrangements of women serving drinks during a cricket match were practised in the 1930s. As seen in some pictures, a few women served tea to the players during a Test at Headingley between England and Australia.
The last match of the series is all set to be played in Pallekele from August 12. Post the Test series, the Indian team will also place a 5-match ODI series and one T20I game.
