It was a pulsating final at the Sirifort auditorium in New Delhi last evening. Home-favourite PV Sindhu comprehensively beat her nemesis from Spain, Carolina Marin in straight sets. And with that, she avenged her ‘Rio loss’, which was heartbreaking at the Olympics, last year. It was a well-fought match with every rally adding to the excitement. Sindhu was the ultimate winner after a gruelling 38-minutes on the centre court. With this win, she has now become world number 2, which is her best career ranking ever. Now that she has peaked, she would look to carry on the purple patch.

Before the epic final in front of a packed stadium at Sirifort, the two players had met nine times and Marin had won 5 of those encounters but in their last international meeting in Dubai, just after the Rio loss, Sindhu had defeated Carolina Marin. The record now stands at 4-5 and with the Singapore Open looming on the horizon.
Before the Indian Super Series got underway, Sindhu, who was ranked 5th, had a point tally of 71,599 while her Spanish rival, Carolina Marin had 73,814 points at the third position.
The win sees the Indian leapfrog her rival with 80,799 points, while Marin will remain third with a total of 80,614 points.
